Assessing multi‐temporal river‐floodplain dynamics as baseline for process‐oriented restoration in a large river: the Duero River, Spain

The time‐based perspective of river‐floodplain processes plays a key role in understanding its evolution until present situation and guiding process‐based river restoration. However, despite the wide range approaches to eco‐hydromorphological characterization, analysis fluvial dynamics their drivers under temporal requires more investigation. For study, historical has been undertaken study section Duero River upstream Zamora (Spain), within framework DRAINAGE project for integral management flood risk. Aerial imagery period 1945–2017 was used create habitat maps that were subsequently intersected identify trajectories change (anthropization, changeless, progression, regression). In addition, Natural Trajectory Index (NTI) an Anthropization Ratio (AR) proposed as way assess balance natural (progression vs. regression) weight anthropization versus sum trajectories, respectively. Results show system with high degree stability anthropization, current imbalance predominance progression ecological succession. Rejuvenation have be reactivated through nature‐based solutions, allowing sustainable water practices.
